It’s that dreaded C-word time again! And with it comes all of those problems of buying the right gifts. But do we really know what to get anyone for Christmas anymore? It seems that we don’t. Instead, we get our loved ones a pointless shower gel kit that only seems to communicate to them that we think they are in dire need of a wash! But for those out there that always struggle when you don’t know what to get someone for Christmas, what are our options?
Going The Practical Route
This is usually a crowd pleaser. Getting practical gifts but we know that someone’s needed, no matter how banal the choice of gift may appear to outsiders, can be a pleasant surprise. On the other hand, getting a relative a cordless drill doesn’t scream festivities! And so, if you are looking to give them that wow factor, this isn’t necessarily it. On the other hand, you may want to go for something a bit more personal. If they like food, and they like Christmas, getting personalised advent calendars for the whole family is an easy option. But if you’re going to do this, let it be a part of a bigger present. And of course, with advent calendars, you kind of need to give that to them before December starts! Advent calendars, food, and various culinary gifts work great together, but as part of a hamper type present. Or it could be a very thoughtful gift if you offer to purchase food for your loved ones for Christmas because we all know how expensive that turkey and all the trimmings really are- thoughtful, yet left of centre!
The Financial Gift
It’s not particularly personal, but money is what you give to someone when you don’t know what to give them! Money is all well and good, but instead, think about it more laterally. For example, you may want to make a donation to charity in the name of the recipient. This is a good deed, and it reinforces the spirit of Christmas, something we seem to lack in nowadays.
If you’re really trying to make a big gesture, Christmas memories of past, present and future is the real way to get into the spirit of the season. Why are nowadays a lot of people are big on experiences as gifts, such as holidays or expeditions, the truth is, there is so many of us out there that cannot afford it, that we have to go down this route. It’s a very rustic approach, and it’s got some charm to it. While nowadays there are options for people to create scrapbooks of memories, taking that time to put everything together yourself is a wonderful way to reacquaint yourself with the recipient of the gift, especially if you don’t see them that much, but it’s also amazingly cheap. At the back of our minds, we are always thinking about money, but if you want to do something meaningful for someone at Christmas, it doesn’t have to be so expensive, does it?
If you don’t know what to get anyone for Christmas anymore, it’s worth starting with these three approaches. At least you have your bases covered. Think on.
